This month I focus most of my attention on Peridot, August's most celebrated birthstone, along with complimentary gemstones such as Green Apatite and Garnets. 

As you will learn, Peridot has been the official birthstone of August since women were legally granted the right to vote. They may be found ranging from lime-green to olive-tones. Metaphysically, green gemstones in general are all connected to our heart energy centers. The frequency of these stones resonate with the vibration of expressing unconditional love towards others; which is not possible if we cannot do the same for ourselves. This is why you'll also see bits and pieces of rose quartz thrown into the mix because pink resonates with the frequency of self-love. 

Green Apatite and Green Garnets will also be found throughout this month's collection because I wanted to offer a variety of complimentary green gemstones. 

What Is Peridot?

Peridot is a gem-quality form of the mineral olivine. This material is also referred to as chrysolite. 

Large quantities of peridot are mined from the San Carlos reservation in Arizona as well as in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, and China. Peridot is also mined in large quantities in many other parts of the world like Pakistan and Kenya. Peridot that is mined in the U.S. is usually much smaller and lighter in color than the varieties from other locales. 

Some peridot specimens have been discovered in meteorites, though this finding is very rare.

History

Peridot is a French word that is derived from the Arabic word "faridat" meaning gem. The use of peridot in jewelry and other applications dates as far back as the ancient Egyptians from around 1500 B.C., making it one of the oldest gemstones. Egyptians referred to these green jewels as "gems of the sun." Back then the stones were mined on the Egyptian island Topazios which is now known as Zeberget. The stones were only mined at nighttime because it was believed they were not easily seen in daylight. Mining at night was also likely a result of the island being infested with snakes.

Throughout history, peridot jewels have been confused with emeralds. It was thought for a long time that the very large peridot jewels weighing more than 200 carats each adorning the Shrine of the Three Kings at the Cologne Cathedral were emeralds. Likewise, many people now believe that Cleopatra's famous "emerald" jewels were in fact peridot. Peridot has also been mistakenly referred to throughout history as topaz.

It is believed that Napoleon gave Josephine a peridot jewel as a symbol of his love for her.

According to the National Association of Jewelers, peridot has been the official birthstone of August along with sardonyx since 1912. 

Folklore

Some of the myths and legends surrounding peridot include these:

• In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Hele who is the goddess of fire and volcanoes. 
• Romans referred to peridot as "evening emerald" because unlike the deep hues of emeralds, peridot gemstones did not darken at night and still shimmered under candlelight. 
• Legend has it that peridot could ward off evil spirits.
• Peridot is thought to aid in the success of marriage and other relationships. This may be because it is thought to encourage positive energy as well as suppress ego and jealousy.

• Peridot is one of the few gems that occurs in only one color, green! Shades range from lime to olive. The percentage of iron contained in the crystal structure determines the intensity and tint of the green.

• Way back in the day, it was used as a medical remedy. It was powdered to cure asthma and was held under the tongue to, supposedly, lessen the thirst of a person suffering from fever.
  
  
• People in medieval times confused peridot with emerald. For centuries, people believed the fabulous 200-ct. gems adorning the shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Germany’s Cologne Cathedral were emeralds. Nope, they're,  peridots.

Science & Origin of Green Garnet

Green Garnet is an uncommon variety of Garnet that’s composed of aluminum and calcium, with possible traces of chromium and vanadium. When one of the latter two minerals are present, this mineral is usually referred to as “Tsavorite Garnet”. Within the 6 types of Garnets (Andradite, Grossular, Uvarovite, Pyrope, Almandite, Spessartite) only Grossular, Andradite, and Uvarovite can be seen as green. For most types, the color can range from a transparent light green to a dark green that can look almost black. The rarest variety of Green Garnet is the Demantoid Garnet, where finding a stone weighing more than 2 carats is extremely rare.

Meaning & Energy

A few chemical impurities within it are the only differences between Green and Red Garnet’s physical structure. These colors share the same properties and project very similar energies. One minor difference is the connection that Green Garnet has with your heart space. This stone helps one open themselves up to the world around them and better connect them to the ones they love. Happiness and joy may soon follow, with one turning their attention to their truest desires. Achieving those emotions will become a priority, as you will soon realize the importance of self-accomplishments. Garnet's natural manifesting and grounding ability make this a true power stone.
